A Practica is not a class and not a party – it's the evening in between. You come to the studio, dance what you've learned in your course, try out figures that aren't quite there yet, ask others how they lead or follow something. No programme, no teacher standing at the front. Just music and people who want to practise.

What makes us special: the music comes from you. Whoever feels like hearing a particular song puts it on – you are the DJs. That way you get to hear what your dance partners enjoy, and practise to the songs you've been missing in class.

PRACTISE, WITHOUT PRESSUREWhat's still a bit shaky from the course becomes solid here – with people who are practising exactly the same things.
ALL LEVELSBasic 1 through to Advanced dance together. Beginners learn fastest by dancing with more experienced dancers.
WITHOUT A PARTNERAs in class: we rotate partners. Coming alone is perfectly normal.
YOU CHOOSE THE MUSICBachata, Sensual, Moderna, Zouk – whoever fancies it, gets to DJ. No playlist handed down from above.

1 · ARRIVINGThe door opens a few minutes before. Dance shoes or clean trainers, water is available in the studio.
2 · DANCING & PRACTISINGNo announcements, no warm-up round – you join in whenever you like and change partners as you please.
3 · MUSIC FROM YOUR HANDSConnect your phone to the sound system, request a song, put it on. Teachers are often around and happy to help if you ask.

QUESTIONS

Do I need to be enrolled in a course at Bachata Basel?

No. The Practica is open to everyone who dances Bachata – no matter where you learnt it. Course members get to meet their fellow dancers from other courses here.

I'm a complete beginner – will this be of any use to me?

Yes, as soon as you know the basic steps (from Basic 1, second or third lesson onwards). At the social you'll dance with people from all levels and quickly get a feel for what you can already do. If you've never danced before, it's better to start with a free taster session.

What is the cost of the Practica?

Payment is made on-site. You can see the current price next to the date above – we keep it deliberately low so you can come as often as you like.

Do you need to sign up?

A confirmation helps us with planning and helps you, so that we can reach you if an evening is cancelled. But you're also welcome to just drop by spontaneously.

How does it work with the music?

There is a sound system in the studio that you can connect your phone to. Anyone who wants to play a song joins the queue – have a quick word with each other, then it plays. Please be considerate about the length so that everyone gets a turn.

Does the Practica take place during the school holidays?

No – we take a break during the Basel-Stadt school holidays, just as we do with the courses. The dates shown above only ever reflect the evenings that are actually taking place.

Which styles?

Mainly Bachata in all styles (Traditional, Sensual, Moderna). Zouk and Salsa are welcome when the music calls for it – that's entirely up to you on the night.
